About

Taprobane Walk started in 2016. It has stayed small on purpose.

We design private journeys across Sri Lanka for a limited number of travellers each year. There's a small team, and one person stays with your trip from the first reply to the day you fly home.

Why this exists

I used to write the brochures. That's most of the reason for this.

Before Taprobane Walk I worked in digital marketing. Which means I spent years writing the kind of travel copy this website deliberately doesn't — the paragraphs about hidden corners and breathtaking vistas that could describe any country on earth, because they were written by people who had never been to the one they were selling.

I started this in 2016 because I wanted to do the opposite. I like walking into places and working out how they fit together — the culture, the history, the reason a town sits where it does. That's genuinely the thing I enjoy, and it turns out to be the useful part of designing someone's fortnight.

The marketing background hasn't gone to waste. It mostly tells me what not to write.

What the time bought

Ten years of the same roads.

Not a qualification — just repetition. You learn a country by driving it in different months, in different weather, with different people in the car.

Which routes actually work.

Not the distances, the drive times. And which ones collapse when the rain comes.

Which month, which coast.

Two monsoons and opposite seasons. Most of what we correct on half-planned enquiries is a coast booked in the wrong month.

Who to call when it changes.

Ten years of drivers, guides and owners. The value isn't the list — it's that they pick up.

When to say no.

The most useful thing experience gave us is knowing which trips won't work, and saying so before you've paid for one.

Who you'll deal with

A small team, and you'll know which one of us you're talking to.

There is a team — drivers, guides, and people who make things happen on the ground when a plan needs changing. But the planning side is deliberately small, and it's why we cap how many journeys we take a year.

One person writes your itinerary, answers your questions, and is still the person replying when something needs sorting mid-trip. Not a case number, not a handover to an operations desk, and not a different name each time you write.

That doesn't scale past a certain number of trips. We'd rather run into that ceiling than pretend it isn't there.

I'm Sri Lankan and I've lived here nearly all my life. I've been designing trips since 2016; before that, digital marketing. If you enquire, I'm probably the one who replies.

We turn enquiries down when the calendar is full.

It isn't a sales line. It's the arithmetic of one person staying with every trip. If your dates are already taken we'll tell you in the first reply rather than three emails later — and if what you want isn't something we'd do well, we'll say that too.
