Adventure

Walking the hills, surfing the east, climbing at dawn.

Pidurangala before the heat. The Knuckles by foot, not Jeep. Arugam Bay when the swell shows up. Logistics, permits and the right local, handled.

What this thread actually covers

The interior of Sri Lanka is mountainous, wet, and far less visited than the coast. Most people see the hill country through a train window. This thread is for people who want to get out at the station and walk into it.

The routes we actually use

The Knuckles Range for real multi-day trekking through cloud forest and villages that see very few outsiders. Horton Plains for the World’s End escarpment, which needs an early start to beat the cloud. Adam’s Peak for the pilgrimage climb, best done overnight to reach the summit at sunrise. Ella as a soft option with good short walks and somewhere decent to eat afterwards.

For water: Arugam Bay in season for surf, Kitulgala for whitewater, and the south-west reefs for diving between November and April.

What we handle

Permits, guides, transfers to trailheads that are further from anywhere than they look on a map, and accommodation that understands a 3am departure and will give you breakfast at 2:30. The unglamorous logistics are most of what makes an adventure trip work.

Honest answers

Before you choose this thread.

It ranges. Little Adam's Peak is a gentle forty minutes. World's End at Horton Plains is a flat but long nine kilometres that starts at 3am in the cold. The Knuckles range has genuine multi-day trekking with a guide. Adam's Peak is 5,500 steps in the dark. Tell us your honest fitness and we'll be honest back about what fits.
Arugam Bay's season runs roughly May to September, with the cleanest swell usually July and August. Outside that window the point is flat and the town is half shut. The south-west coast surfs on the opposite season — November to April — so there is always somewhere working.
Yes, and for the Knuckles you legally need both. We use guides we've walked with, not the cheapest name on a list. For Adam's Peak during pilgrimage season we'll also tell you which nights to avoid unless you enjoy queueing on a staircase.
