What this thread actually covers

Sri Lanka’s coastline changes character every twenty minutes of driving. The south-west is developed and easy. The deep south is quieter, with wide empty beaches and a slower rhythm. The east is a different country again — flatter, hotter, emptier, and on a completely opposite season.

How we choose where to put you

We start with your dates, because the dates decide the coast. Then the size of your group, because that decides villa or hotel. Then how much you actually want to do — some people want a beach with good restaurants within walking distance, others want nothing within reach of anything.

A note on booking beach stays

Beach properties in Sri Lanka vary enormously between a photograph and a Tuesday in February. We visit the places we book. When a house has changed hands or gone downhill, we know before you do — which is the whole point of using people who live here.

Honest answers

Before you choose this thread.

Two monsoons mean there is always a right coast. December to March: the south and west. May to September: the east and north-east. Going to the wrong coast in the wrong month is the single most common mistake in Sri Lanka travel, and it's entirely avoidable.
Parts of it, in January. Mirissa's main beach in peak week is busy and the whale-watching boats are busier. Fifteen minutes further along the road there are bays with four people on them. We book the second kind — that's most of the value we add on this thread.
For two people, usually a small boutique hotel. For four or more, almost always a villa with staff — it works out cheaper per head, you get a cook, and the day has no timetable. We have relationships with house owners rather than a booking engine, which is why we can tell you which villa has the noisy road behind it.
From Mirissa, between roughly December and April, blue whales pass close to shore. It's genuinely one of the best places in the world for it. We'll book a boat that keeps a legal distance and doesn't chase — several don't, and it matters.
